PHANTOGRAMS 

A phantogram is a special kind of a stereo picture, usually anaglyph, which when viewed with anaglyph glasses (red/cyan) from the same angle and distance as the original stereograph was taken, the image appears to be sitting up on the surface as if the real object was there. When done correctly and the real object is placed next to the virtual phantogram image, it is difficult to tell which is which. Phantograms are usually viewed from a 45° angle. Below are some examples of phantograms. Most are the result of photographing real images, and a few are computer generated images.

It is difficult to view phantograms on a computer screen because the monitor has to be viewed from a 45° angle. If your monitor is a laptop, then tilt it away and you may see the phantogram correctly. Otherwise, print out an image, place the print in front of you on a desk and look at it with anaglyph glasses from a 45° angle.

Many of the images are presented both as a phantogram, and a photograph of that phantogram on a table. These "photos" of the phantograms show how a phantogram would look printed, without your need to print out the image. I call these images "simulated" phantograms. They are the ones in the middle of the chart.
